It is important to teach children how to control or regulate their emotions. But many are asking, “how”? As a childcare provider, we often hear this dilemma from parents. This is why you need to educate yourself on the basics of child psychology.
Petits Poussins LES, known for its excellent daycare in the Lower East Side, New York, gives you these parenting tips to help your child deal with anger.
- Never give in to tantrums.
Most parents will give anything to their child who throws a tantrum. This only exacerbates the problem, as it makes your child think that tantrums allow them to get what they want. - Teach emotions.
Sometimes, children become angry because they don’t understand their feelings. Help them identify emotion by teaching them how to verbalize it. Let them know that what they feel is being “mad,” “scared,” “lonely,” and others. - Prepare a calm-down kit.
A child may need a calm-down plan in place to regulate emotions. This plan usually involves other activities to calm themselves down (as the name suggests) like drawing, reading, etc. But don’t initiate the calm-down activity as it only teaches them how to divert attention instead of actually controlling their emotions.
To become an effective parent, you also need proper education on your child’s behavior. You can start by researching online for tips or consulting an expert.
